I chose this photo of my outing in the city the other day because of the smoke that has blown in from the BC fires! I like to head out into nature often, and just notice what’s there, and be still…Notice the smoke in the air; The calmness of the quiet pathway as everyone hides from the smoke; The trees that are still standing and withstanding everything. They are our breath of life! Their exhale is our inhale…We are nature! The windy treetops of our minds will settle, and we will come out of the smoke that clouds our minds and our lives. Be still and know that you are emerging…Emerging out of the smoke into who you really are and what you are meant to be.
Be Still and Know Your True Purpose
I’ve noticed that the quieter I become, the more I notice others who are hustling around doing things, never really figuring out who they really are, or what they are meant to do. They are tense much of the time, and never really conscious of their words, actions, or behaviours. Oh, I’ve been there too, and sometimes think I’m still there! That’s why becoming still and conscious on a regular basis – with a neutral mind rather than a busy mind – will help your soul emerge into what it’s here to do. Here are just some of the ways you can do this:
Slowing the Pace & Feeling the Connection
One way to be still and know your true purpose is simply by slowing down the pace of your busy life and connecting with nature. Walk barefoot on the grass or a sandy beach; Feel the blades of grass or the sand between your toes; Notice the cool breeze on your skin as it blows off the river water as you bike by; Be still and present in each moment, practicing mindfulness; See the world from a bird’s eye view with greater perspective. This is how you emerge into what you are capable of being. The extra space this creates allows the answers to come to you because you are more open and receptive.
Being Kind To Yourself
When you slow down and create more open space in your heart, some feelings and emotions may start to emerge. They may even feel unpleasant, but if you notice and accept them as they are, you become aware of them and can be gentle with your feelings and yourself. When you simply allow, you begin the healing process. Be still and know that your feelings will flow through you like water, and you will heal.
Opening Up To New Experiences
Once the healing begins, you may find yourself craving new people, new places, and new experiences that lead you more in line with your soul’s true purpose. I know that whenever I set foot on a new path that leads me to a gorgeous lake, I have the enthusiasm of a little kid in a candy store. Travelling somewhere I’ve never been before makes my spirit feel free, and gives me courage and confidence. Meeting new friends or starting a new relationship can give you new, brilliant insights about who you really are. Be still and know that when you live in the light of your soul, you are living with purpose.
Being Receptive To Love
Love starts from within yourself, and then extends outwards to others. If you think about romantic relationships, we often think of finding someone else who will love us, and we think that love comes from the other person. But really, the love is within ourselves. In relationship, two souls come together, each emanating their own love. You are not getting love from outside of yourself, rather, together you are sharing your own love from within. So the more kindness, compassion, gratitude, and love you can have for yourself, the more you can share with others. Be still and know that you are Love.

Everything Emerges At Just the Right Moment
Sometimes you wait so impatiently for things to come together just the way you want them to that they never come together. Or perhaps they do come together, just not the way you had hoped. When you allow yourself to become still, you allow things to emerge at just the right moment. You don’t have to wait for it, you just trust that in the stillness, answers will emerge, and they do! The truth emerges at just the right moment without effort. Be still and know that everything comes together in its own time, when you are ready and receptive!
Anxiety Is Released Through Breath
If you feel a lot of anxiety, which many of us do these days for multiple reasons, it’s helpful to practice yoga or meditation on a regular basis to release the anxiety through your breath. While yoga is a moving meditation, you are still bringing the body and breath into stillness. This helps to calm the mind, body, and spirit. You can do this by first paying attention to the sensations in the body, and allowing the sensations to teach you where anxiety lives in your body. With this awareness, you can then start to release the anxiety through conscious breath work. Kundalini yoga is a great way to move stagnant energy out of the body through your breath. Once you know that you are separate from your anxiety and stress, and can move that energy, you’ll have more control over yourself and your life.
Know That You Have the Courage of a Lion
When you gain control of your life, you build up your courage to face challenges, do new things, be who you really are, and say what you need to say. You become responsive instead of reactive. For example, when going about your daily interactions with others, if you’re all caught up in the mess of your mind, and someone triggers you, you may react or withdraw in anger. But if you train your mind to be still on a regular basis, you can respond with the courage of a lion, and speak your truth calmly as a natural response to the trigger. Be still and know the the truth of your heart.
Be Still and Know That Facing Fear Will Bring Peace & Calm
It may seem unimaginable to face the things we fear the most. But as the saying goes, “On the other side of fear is your freedom”. George Addair said, “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear”. Easier said than done to go face to face with your perceived enemy or danger.
One way to ease the fear is to realize that “This, too, shall pass”…Acknowledge that fear is just a feeling, and we have control over our feelings when we come into stillness. When we meditate, we watch our feelings floating by in our mind’s eye like clouds in the sky. The more we do this practice, the more the smoke in the mind clears, the more the clouds dissipate, and the more we can let go of that feeling that terrifies us. Be still and know that facing and releasing our fear will instil peace and calm in our hearts.
You Are the Guru
There are many other ways to be still and know that you are the Guru, but this is a great start. The guru is within you, meaning your heart knows what is true. With the balance of your heart, your throat chakra, and your third eye of intuition, you can express your truth to yourself, others, and outward in the world, and emerge out of the smoke and your cocoon into that beautiful butterfly.
